Did you know…
There was a research study that looked at the effects of parent-implemented language interventions.
(That essentially means speech therapy that was done by the parents at home.)
They looked at the impact these interventions had on the language skills of children between 18 months and 5 years old for children with primary and secondary language delays - so kids who just had language delays and kids who also had other disabilities.
They found that parent-implemented language interventions had significant positive impacts on both receptive and expressive language skills.
This was true for children with and without intellectual disabilities.
AND when they compared the results between intervention provided by therapists and by parents…
They found that parents were just as effective as therapists.
And for receptive language and expressive syntax (understanding language and creating sentences)…
Parents were even more effective than the speech therapists.
So YES. Work on speech at home and feel totally confident that you can make great progress that way.
